Archaeological Excavations in Wallingford: The Site Diary
Between 19th July and 9th August, 2008, a team of archaeologists from the Universities of Leicester, Exeter and Oxford - collaborating on an AHRC-funded research project - were excavating in the market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire.

Wallingford is one of the best preserved Anglo-Saxon burhs in England, with earthen ramparts up to 8m high encircling the historic core of the town. The excavations were a rare opportunity to look beneath the surface of some of the open spaces inside and outside the defences. We are working together with Wallingford Museum, Northmoor Trust and The Wallingford Historical and Archaeological Society TWHAS.

The excavation diary was set up to report on the investigations and results as they happened. It was updated every day with news of archaelogical discoveries, pictures of finds and unfolding evidence. A further set of 3 digs occurred between 4th- 25th July 2009. Click on this link to discover what we found.

Further digs are planned this year - check the Events diary to see when and where they will take place and become involved in the fascinating history of Wallingford.
